about
Like A Diamond was written in the midst of a painful separation. Its about betrayal, twisted viewpoints, warped self interest and denial. The hurt of loss and anger mixed in a toxic melting pot, found their way on to tape! It’s strange how love can turn nasty. I wanted the distorted bridge to convey this torment and contrast against a sweet, folky-rock type chorus. I heard Neil Young in my head for that section! I love his honest, visioning lyrics, and relaxed, acoustic country feel.
The lines are true - I did “remember how we used to walk together, the moonlight in your eyes, I asked you to be mine”. It was that romantic. We only had a pocket full of dreams, but we had each other. It is hard to let go of love and true sentiments don’t fade with time. The diamond is really for love that endures, is pure and unblemished. It’s the commitment. Even if the other walks away, forgets, denies, regrets, the same diamond will be mined, discovered again and hopefully treasured forever. For that journey to begin, the learning is, it starts within.
