about
A relationship gone wrong, a struggle to belong, a severe loss or setback, or times when I simply can’t keep putting on a brave face. Sometimes on our journey, we lose hope, feel we’ve failed, been rejected or ridiculed.
What if I could write a song about that tiny voice inside or the words a good friend once told me when I needed it most, “Don’t give up. Keep going. You can do it, you’re going to beat this. I believe in you!”?
That is how “Pure Gold” came about. McCallum and I just started to write it and we knew immediately we had something. It was exciting, exhilarating and meaningful all at the same time. I remember singing the bridge section for the first time, “When you shine… you’re beautiful… so beautiful, you’re pure gold..” As writers we live for these golden moments. I hope this song helps people feel how precious they are, whatever turbulence is going on in their lives.
“I wanted the video of this song to be about real people, not actors, Real relationships, raw feelings. The mundane, the ever-familiar, the struggle to find meaning in it all sometimes. The isolation we feel when life’s trials get too much. And to show, that even so, even though you may feel you are nothing or don’t matter, how wrong you are. How special you are, how worthy, how undefined you are by the externals of society. Your inner worth is far more valuable. You matter. Your feelings matter, whatever they are. Your true identity to me shines. You are beautiful, as you are, warts and all.
Valerie Sarruf (the lady in the video) is a dear friend of mine. She is also a great actress. I wanted her in the video (we didn’t have time in the end to include the other people I wanted) because I know her struggles, her dream. We’ve shared many a conversation. I also wanted the bus, the street, the tube - everyday people, everyday life. Have you noticed how quickly it passes by, and how one word of encouragement at the right time can change it all. It’s that humanity I wanted to convey.”
lyrics
Pure Gold Written By: Malcolm Connell/Alex Golding
Sometimes it's hard to hold onto your dreams
The road is long and there are mountains so steep
Don't stop believing
When darkness falls and you can't see the light
Look deep inside you'll find the strength to go on
Use all your courage
Don't be afraid to start again
You’re pure gold a beautiful sight
Live your dream it's your time
You're pure gold don't let it fade
This could be your brightest day
I can see you shine, I can see you shine
Pure gold
Hold on to love no matter what they say
And though it hurts you won’t be the first to break
Reach out for heaven
Just trust your heart it knows the way
You’re pure gold a beautiful sight
Live your dream it's your time
You're pure gold don't let it fade
This could be your brightest day
I can see you shine, I can see you shine
Pure gold
Shine
you're beautiful, so beautiful
when you shine
you're beautiful, so beautiful
You’re pure gold a beautiful sight
Pure gold
Pure gold
